Opening 50 Year event for Glasgow
Yoga Extension Sun 10th Dec
— Sushama Chitale from Pune

Sushama (Megha) Chitale has been a student at RIMYI, Pune, for over 22 years and currently attends classes with Abhijata and Sunitaji. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿Coming up: 50th Anniversary of
Iyengar Yoga in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

The Edinburgh University Yoga Society started in 1974 giving us reason to celebrate a 50th anniversary of Iyengar Yoga in Scotland throughout 2024.

1. National Iyengar Yoga Day on 20th January 2024, celebrate National Iyengar Yoga in Scotland with tartan. Across all social media channels.

2. A free live online classes every month of 2024 for all members of iYoga Glasgow and East of Scotland Iyengar Yoga. We hope to grow non-teaching membership for ESIY and iYG and through these classes.

3. Potentially three Scottish based workshops with international visiting teachers. Planning discussions are underway.

4. An in-person, live Scottish 50th celebration event with a Scottish teaching line up.

5. A new website promoting 50 years of Iyengar Yoga in Scotland which will become home to new digital archive that includes photos, photo stories, interviews, and historical articles.

6. A podcast with interviews with key personnel covering the growth and development of Iyengar Yoga over the last 50 years in Scotland.

It’s an exciting line up and our aim with of all these 50th anniversary activities and events is to open up Iyengar Yoga to a wider audience and attract new students and new members here in Scotland.

Yoga Space: Yoga & Climate Action

You're invited to join us for Yoga Space on Friday 17 November, 2-3pm on Zoom.

Yoga Space is a platform for IY(UK) members to get together online to learn and share views and ideas on our yoga lives and practice.
For this event panellists Helen Clay (Sheffield), Laura Potts (York) and Kim Skinner (Manchester) will put forward ideas on how yoga's yamas and niyamas might influence our thinking on yoga and climate action.

The panel has shared details of what to expect:

This session will open discussion about whether and how yoga can contribute to addressing the climate crisis. Evidence of the crisis mounts daily along with the realisation that human systems, values and behaviours are responsible. We need to do things differently. But how should we act and what can we do?

Our panel will present ideas about these issues. In her article for the Autumn edition of Iyengar Yoga News (due out this month), Helen explores how teachings in the Bhagavadgītā about karmayoga, the ‘yoga of action’ have wisdom to offer, to widen perspectives, and help yoga extend beyond individual health and wellbeing towards planetary health and wellbeing, from ‘me’ to ‘we’. Helen will also report on the nascent ‘Yoga Climate Action Network’ in Sheffield.

Along with Helen’s article is an open letter from Laura, which considers climate action in relation to yoga’s teachings about habitual patterns of mind and behaviour (saṃskāras) and the practice of yamas and niyamas, particularly non-harming (ahiṃsa) and truthfulness (satya). She particularly references our habitual travel for yoga and the imperative of environmental justice.

Kim is a yoga student and part time teacher and has lived in South Manchester for 31 years. For 27 of those years she has been involved in a campaign to save some nearby fields from developers. Being involved in campaigning has been, at times, arduous; reflecting on the yoga student’s relationship with other people and the world around us has helped sustain that commitment.

We hope that those who are concerned about the relationship between yoga and climate action will come along with their concerns and ideas, and that we can have a productive and useful conversation. As ever, you are also welcome to come along and listen.

Iyengar Yoga News should be arriving with you soon so you will be able to read the article and letter in advance of the meeting.

This session will be recorded and shared with attendees after the event.

Please book by midday on Thursday 16 November.

About Iyengar yoga & Iyoga Glasgow

An iYoga Glasgow class takes an holistic approach to yoga. We use precise physical postures (asanas) and breathing (pranayama) to balance body and mind. It’s a challenging, but not competitive, practice. We focus on the alignment of the body, while taking into account each practitioner’s needs. Yoga is beneficial for people of all ages, regardless of their physical condition. Practising yoga relaxes and energises. Iyengar provides an unshakeable foundation for physical and mental well being.

B.K.S Iyengar developed and practised Iyengar Yoga until his death at the age of 95 in Pune, India. Time Magazine listed him as one of the most influential 100 people in the world. Yoga is an ancient, tried and tested, system of personal development. Mr Iyengar’s system is based on the 1,700 year old teachings of the guru Patanjali.

We are members of Iyengar Yoga (UK) – The National Iyengar Yoga Association.
